BHEF Des Moines Member-led Local Project

Regional Effort

Dedicated leadership makes Des Moines fertile ground for an effort that ties a big community vision to economic and education goals. Capital Crossroads, a partnership among business, education, and other community leaders to develop a five-year strategy for the region, is evidence of a commitment to the prosperity of the region by numerous stakeholders. BHEF member David Maxwell, president of Drake University, became interested in pursuing a community-wide improvement effort after witnessing how the business community, with strategic guidance from BHEF, had spurred progress in Louisville, KY. At BHEF’s Cities for Success Leadership Summit, he was joined by a Des Moines-based team including the mayor, superintendents, foundation leaders, college presidents, and corporate CEOs to change the face of education in the community.

The team is using momentum built during BHEF’s Cities for Success to nest a comprehensive education reform effort within the Capital Crossroads vision for Greater Des Moines and Central Iowa.
